Bio - Claire Murray
Education
I hold a Master of Social Work (MSW) degree from the University of Toronto, with a specialization in the Children and Families field of study. I thoroughly enjoyed and learned a lot from my classes, most notably those that focused on Social Work Practice with Children and Adolescents, Individuals and Families, Couples Therapy, Group Therapy, and Emotion-Focused Therapy. Additionally, while completing my Master’s, I took extra courses through CAMH, where I received valuable education on Mental Health and Addictions.
My educational journey also includes a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and Criminology from the University of Toronto Mississauga. During this time, I completed an Undergraduate Thesis equivalent on the topic of gender and sexuality. I worked with a talented lab team for two years, collecting data on arousal through eye-tracking technology and completing my thesis with a deep appreciation for research.
I am eager to continue expanding my knowledge and education in the years to come. My next goal is to complete training in EMDR, so that I can offer additional trauma-focused support and interventions to my clients.
Work
My professional social work and counselling experience spans a variety of settings, including schools, healthcare facilities, and community organizations, where I’ve supported children, adolescents, adults, and families. I have provided counseling to individuals facing challenges such as anxiety, self-esteem issues, grief, and navigating relationships. I have also facilitated workshops and support groups aimed at fostering mental health awareness, social skills development, and community building. In clinical settings, I’ve worked closely with individuals navigating complex medical, emotional, and systemic challenges. My work has involved conducting assessments, supporting grief and trauma processing, and creating resource tools to address psychosocial needs.
Outside the field of social work and psychotherapy, I’ve had roles that taught me a lot about care, connection, and adaptability. For over 7 years, I worked as a caregiver for someone with dementia, where I found creative ways to encourage mental stimulation, physical activity, and moments of joy, all while providing comfort and support. I’ve also spent time in wellness spaces, working alongside massage therapists, physiotherapists, and acupuncturists to create a calm and welcoming environment for clients. Supporting children with developmental disabilities was another rewarding experience, where I learned the importance of patience, flexibility, and meeting each child’s unique needs, especially when helping them navigate big emotions or behavioural challenges.
Across all roles, I have honed my ability to build strong therapeutic relationships, apply evidence-based modalities, and adapt my approach to meet the unique needs of clients. I approach each client with warmth and a sincere commitment to their well-being, fostering a positive and supportive environment. I bring a non-judgmental attitude and humility to my practice, recognizing clients as experts in their own lives and creating an inclusive, respectful atmosphere. My commitment to trauma-informed practice allows me to provide sensitive and effective support, ensuring that my clients’ needs are met with understanding and care.
Personal Life
In my personal life, I enjoy activities that inspire curiosity and balance. I have recently started practicing yoga to stay active and grounded. I’m not particularly flexible or strong yet, but I’m enjoying the process of learning something new and challenging myself.
Traveling and learning new languages are passions of mine, allowing me to connect with diverse cultures and broaden my perspective. In the last few years, I have backpacked through Italy and Greece, with each trip lasting around a month. I spent a year on Duolingo learning the basics of each language and am proud of my ability to now read the Greek alphabet.
I also cherish quieter moments, like reading or spending time outdoors, where I can unwind and recharge. I am no stranger to nights spent on the couch, watching whole seasons of television shows or enjoying the latest thriller movie. Whether resting under the open sky or embracing the energy of new experiences, I value the opportunities to learn, grow, and maintain a sense of harmony in my life.
